The Reddevil build - the twincharged Subaru Legacy Wagon
« on: May 04, 2009, 06:34:01 PM »

Bringing the basics over from HMT....

I got this off Ebay new for $200 or so in December 2006

Parts......

Used an existing manifold flange and pipe, welding it to the extra intercooler pipe I had

The turbo flange is 2.75 opening and I had to get there from a 2" pipe, so I bought two reducers and welding them in and up!

And the finished product.

Cost me $10 for the two reducers and the flange

the downpipe..... Its just 2.5" for now, didnt have any 3"

The compressor specs are...

compressor = 58 mm inducer, 76 exducer and the turbine is 56 mm and 64 mm

Here it is "installed"

If I could have welded aluminium, and had the oil line, the damn thing would have started then.

 >:D

Notice how the turbo out goes so nicely into the supercharger! :)

Also notice how restricted my inlet to the turbo is :(

Since I didnt want to pay for someone to weld up the aluminium intake into the supercharger, I made my own.

If I could have gotten paid shop rate for the time I spent, I should have gotten the aluminium part done by someone else!!!!!

But.. Now I know I can weld 22 guage stainless!

The tubing is standard whatever SSAUTOCROME stainless tubing, the flange is 1/8" scrounged metal, and the rest is 22 guage (THIN) stainless.  Needless to say, I had a few blow thoughs.... But in the end, what counts is how it works, and compared to the stock section, I would say 80%..... But since its being force fed now, 80% is closer to 95%....

Next step, oil lines.....

Got the turbo connected to the supercharger.....

I fabbed a oil drain line...

I would have continued and be done with it, but was waiting on an EBAY external wastegate...... I didn't continue until I know where the hell it was gonna fit...  However, I ended up using the internal wastegate.

Here it is "All" done and running!

I had a pinhole exhuast leak on the downpipe, I needed to wrap the turbo with insulation, and one or two other odds and ends, but the damn thing is was TITS!!!!

Feb 3, 2007

"So I just took it out and drove it up and down the freeway once....... about 8 low rpm pulls, never more than 4500 rpm...

First annoying problem...

Down pipe is too "long" and exhaust hits the most minor of speed bumps.... I will have to pull the downpipe off and cut about 1-2" out of it. I will fix that pinhole leak around the downpipe turbine side flange while I am at it...

Second annoying problem...

Seems to be ALOT of oil getting jizzed everywhere.. Since its night, and now I am home from the shop, I couldnt look for where it coming from, but I am pretty sure I need to install a different bango bolt into the block, or make an inline brass restrictor.

Third problem....

Not sure, havent driven it long enough...

THE GOOD NEWS>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

IT WORKS!

Its fast as shit

8 psi at 1500 rpm
11 psi at 2500 rpm
16 psi at 3500 rpm

16 psi stays rock steady....

Its fast as shit!

4 extra psi is alot!

And I still havent taken over 4500 rpm!

This was February 10th, 2007 on the 2.2 block, stock turbo pistons

Results are in ;D

284 hp and 305 torque @ 21 psi and 291 hp and 317 torque at 22 psi.

As for the AFR range... My uppipe wideband (Bosch sensor with AEM) read ALOT different... But I didnt knock once...

I wanted 300 hp, but 9 psi wasnt worth breaking something.... Once I actually have a decent exhuast, external wastegate installed, I will be there....

But pretty damn pleased...

April 4th, 2007

Final build list....

Phase 1 2.5 open deck block with pinned cylinders
Phase 1 2.2 crank
Phase 2 connecting rods
STI pistons
ACL bearings
3 ply metal headgaskets (branded Subaru)
2.5 phase 1 heads mild port and polish - unknown what they are from, but they came with oil outs but no oil in (?)

Estimated compression is 7.2-1

Twin turbo intake manifold
1990 2.2 throttle body
820 cc modded STI 550 sidefeed injectors
3-1 Vortech rrfpr

2.5" intercooler piping
Modded large bore JECS MAF.
Big Ass Intercooler

Borla NA header
Custom uppipe and downpipe
2.5 exhaust for now

T3/T4 Garret/Precision turbo (GT30r equivilent)
Eaton M62 supercharger
Greddy "Trust" Manual boost controller

PerfectPower6 piggyback

Devils Own meth injection kit with progressive setup

3 bar MAP

Perfection brand flywheel (new)
Spec stage 4 clutch with 4 puck (if it shows up in time)

And probably some other crap....

Waiting for the clutch

Here I am tapping the 2.5 heads for the oil return. The area I am drilling and tapping is the same exact place turbo heads are tapped.

What is odd about these heads, is that the oil OUT appears to me to be factory.....

I am "getting" the clutch tommorrow via UPS. It must be installed, the motor installed, broken in, tuned and then shoot for high 11's on Saturday. Doable, just not sane.

Saturday is the big Subiefest II. My goal is an ego quest of beating the crap out of $30-$50k STIs..... I don't car if the motor makes it or not, I have spares, just as long as I get some good runs in.

Actually I car, thats why I am going to tune it. hahaha

bunch of issues I am not copying and pasting...

But...

April 6th, 2007

Dynoed 22-23 psi at 60 mile breakin....

311 hp and 355 torque on a Dyno Dynamic dyno.

April 10th, 2007

Ran three 12.7 @ 109.xx tonight. And one 12.8 @ 110.xx!

May 25th, 2007

Running consistant 12.5 @ 112s......

Then lost a tranny

September 19, 2007

Bunch of stuff happened......

New motor, tranny stuff...

March 8 2008

"Could" have hit 400 whp, but the supercharger belt jumped (no surprise, long story).

But I hit 352 whp @ 5000 rpm and power was climbing! Torque was 391 @ 3600 and full @ 4000 rpm in 3rd gear. Boost was 26 psi.

And I had my first popped wastegate hose ever (forgot to zip tie it on) and hit 32 psi @ 4000 rpm and the wheels started slipping on the dyno.  Torque on that run was 405 and I do not know what the power was.....

VERY HAPPY.

This is what RHMT was missing.
Always love it when there's more torque then HP is produced.
Good video, too.

This motor blew up October 18, 2008.....

Reddevil has been pushed back into the garage...... Drying out.... literally. Effing mold.

gonna clean out the engine bay, do some cutting here and there, some wiring here and there, remove some more parts like radio, front speakers, this and that....

405 torque!! :o Cheers for the departed reddevil.

If you ever resurrect it, you should run in rallyes or hill climb—seems almost wasted for drag imo. Anyway, that's what I'd do!

This motor blew up

I'd suggest he fixes that minor problem before he starts any other form of racing... ;D I know how you feel about mold, my 67 was covered in the shit this year. The storage owner somehow didn't think 6" of standing water would do anything.

If it has to sit for long again, spray it with something like concrobium (mold treatment). You can make your own too, it's basicly a water/baking soda mix. I use it because I got 5 gallons free.

Dude you need to revive the red devil. Thats one of the badassest <--- (made that word up just now) cars on the site. Btw i always wondered , why s/c > turbo especially with a s/c like the m62. The sc12 that came off my car is around the same size. Wouldn't turbo > s/c make more power ?

No sc12 use the SC14, 84cid blower with an a/c clutch. I use one on my d16z6/y8 and soon with a holset he351ve all crammed in my '92 hb. ;D

i only mentioned sc12 in reference to the size of the m62. Why does he have a turbo feeding such a small s/c ? Just curious. sc12 gives 74ci per revolution  and the m62 gives 62 ci per revolution. what the m62 lacks in size it makes up for in speed. It spins approx 20% faster than sc12, so they are pretty much on par.

You sc14 d16 is badass bro. I got two sc14 sitting in garage from a previa and a 1ggze. Thought about puting one on my toyota but turbo seemed more attractive.

No dyno I have to drive 250 mile to the closest dyno I trust. :?:
A buddy did time time 0-60 in less than 5.0 sec. ;D

I missed some good drag strip opportunities.

But this year.

Will post in my build thread when I get more done with up to date picts. and all. ;D

Did some clean up work.

Yanked ALL wiring out that was GHETTO FABULOUS.  Wow, what a lot of shit wiring was done over the years!  Everytime I would add/change something, I would just hack into something.  Replacing it all as I start over.

I suspect I am going to go front mounted with the turbo, as in drag style, and move the radiator over the top of the transmission.  Fab up a fiberglass front end as well.  This thing is no longer going to be driven anywhere.

Been there with the wiring stuff.  Especially with stuff done by previous owners that makes you go WTF?
You should seriously try a HE351VE on that thing. It would go great with your goal of fast boost and torque production.

You know, I remember reading back in the day about your car on the old HMT, and just wanted to say that I think the slut really put out some pretty kick ass power for stock shit. I think you should show Subaru what "their shit" can fuckin' handle.

Reassembled the original big power block tonight...

It is the phase 1 2.5 block that I pinned the cylinders in....

Using a modded 2.5 crank that has been bump polished to accept #3 thrust bearing. Using H beam rods. Now I just need pistons....
