grounding/noise issues? idk I'm stumped......HELP?
« on: March 09, 2014, 12:00:04 PM »

So I bought a couple of eBay $17 gauges. 1 oil pressure 1 water temp. So I hook them up and I get a horrible buzz through my speakers. Figure it's a ground issue. So to rule that out I disconnect the ground and go straight to the new side of the batt. Same noise still. So I thought it had something to do with my piece of shit cd player. So I pulled it out and no noise. Put a good working cd player in and now I have noise again. Unplug the rea cables from my amps and the noise goes away. Plug them back in and the noise is back. Power off the cd player but leave the amps hot and I have noise still. Pull power to the gauges and noise goes away. Put it back to the way it was, pull my remote wire to amps so they dont power on but let the cd player power up and with the gauges powered up no noise.

Im at a loss. So it doesnt matter where i get power or ground for these gauges it makes noise when the amps are powered up and the rca's are plugged into them. So this is where I'm at.

How the fuck do I get rid of this buzz/squeal/screeching noise? Without getting rid of the amps or the gauges?

RC filter?  It's been a while since I've touched electronics, JD will most likely call me an idiot for suggesting it.

RCA cables routed near power/ground for amp?

I guess I could try a rca filter, but if it were picking up noise I would assume that it would do it all the time. And no, power cable is ran on one side of the car and rca's on the other side.

Sounds like the RCA's are picking up noise because of a ground loop.

Try running a small wire from the ground on the amp to the ground on the radio.

I'll try that and report back. Gonna just use some alligator clips and some wire to see if it works.

Shitty gauges. You might try putting some filters on the power/gnd for them.

And what are these filters you speak of?

Had another thought too. Engine/Alt grounds might not be making a good clean connection. Try adding a good ground from the alt case to the batt - and then another one from the same place on the alt to the body. Use good heavy cable.

Ground... how does it work?

Filters are caps and inductors and shit.

I'll try grounding the case and all that, but it buzzes without the car running. So I don't see how the alt could really be the issue in this case.

Oh shit, it is doing it without the car running, missed that.

Put some filters on those gauges.
