Talk to me about tuning OBD1 gm tpi stuff.....
« on: February 10, 2014, 01:32:17 PM »

So the plan is to pick up a gm tpi intake manifold and do a little nodding to it and smacking it on my 327 in the nova. Not that being said it's gonna need some sort of tune. Now I've looked into it a little bit. Looks like moates sell most the stuff I need to start tuning. My question is how well is the gm ems systems? Is it limited like turbo edit or is it more in depth to where I can tune just about anything as far as iacv and stuff like that?

The system I was looking into was tuner pro rt and tuner cats. Or skipping all the gm bs and grabbing a ms2 box and using that. Eventually the motor will see some 10 - 15lbs of boost. Don't know how well those systems will work.

Now as far as tuning the gm stuff. Can I use any obd1 tpi gm ecu and tune with speed density or does it have to be a 7730 gm ecu?

The tunerpro bins and xdf's are relatively been ok. The 90-92 speed density 1227730 ecu ($8D) is the easiest and most well documented for the 0bd1 GM.

You could convert to a 99+ ecu like the 411 in the LS1 cars and truck platform, but cost of parts fromt he junkyard isnt bad, but you need to do cam sync, vortec timing cover, and misc sensors will put you way over the price of a MS2.

O and the 730 ecu only is scaled to 1 bar to my knowledge so its not boost friendly. But JD has probably done more of them then me so maybe he has an opinion.

No its only 1 bar scaled. GM doesnt run maps like honda were you get a 1.7bar sensor. If you can edit the XDF i would imagine you could maybe change it to run a 2bar. I dont do code so fuck that noise.
Here are the 3 VE tables..

and it was in this ride:

That's fucking gay. What kinda ems won't let u change the map sensor? Sounds like I might have to go Maga squirt if I ever want to boost this motor.

I have only tuned TBI, but check this out. I did a lot of research back then. It's all pretty fuzzy now, but this is where it came from.

You can if you know how to change Binary Code. I dont...... OBD2 GM tuning is where its at, great reliability and you can do anything with custom operating system upgrades. But its still gonna cost you more money to go OBD2 then to put a MS2 in it.

I remember something about running the syclone bin and setting it for 8 cyl instead of 6 for boost. Been a shit ton of years though. JD might remember something about it.

There is not enough fuel with TPI for a stock engine with cam and exhaust.

Code59 and 7730/7749 is the way to go for boost.  I have a 7730 and ECU plugs, make fair offer shipped.

Also, my GM truck tuning has been $85 (early 90s 454SS), $0D (94-95 TBI), and Code59.

Also, I just noticed you said TPI ECU, not TBI.  Well, there are a bunch of them, champ.  You care to come at us with PN or codebase and might be able to help.  7730/7749 are the ones that have been ported for all the good stuff, FYI, should marry well with the TPI intake/dist/most sensors.

So I'm retard and dont know what half of this shit is...... Ok so there is different code bases? So say for instances crome uberdata and ectune? What I'm looking to pick up is a complete tpi intake manifold as if you just took it off the car with sensors and all. Now I was also gonna pick up a dizzy from same year car. And a 7730 ecu. I would also like to get a complete wiring harness as well. With that said it sounds like I need to do a fuck ton of reading online. What is ported ecu mean..... teach me your ways grand wizard.....

My mind is a bit fuzzy on it since I have been away from it for a while now but, my understanding is the code is basically the chip addressing. You put a file into the tuning program to address the tune properly for the ecu. Sorta like using hondata for distributor ecus and coil on plug ecus just by telling it how the ecu likes it's information presented.

Think of it more like P28, P30, P72 etc instead of Crome, Ectune etc.

never tried using syty code on a 730 ecm. looks like ill be looking into that.

;DDD ok im chiming in here. I have the complete tpi setup  with ecu and dist.
I also have the new vortec system reprogramer so we can use the vortec intake manifold and all sensors. I have the jet programer and it has options for boost in there. I have a ecu/wiring guru who can take the new style obd2 ecu and wire it so we can use the tpi setup. Shoot me a text at 425-327-7828 and i will set u up with any gm stuff you want or need.  Im still lurking in the shadows with a boosted small block. Now that i have settled into my new job and after hrs shop we can do some serious turbo builds. Just picked up a 5.3 think im gona play with it to see what it can handle stock. Caddy motor was put on hold due to thiefs stealing the h-beam rods and the dual quad intake and carbs and nitrous plates. I HATE thieves. Just got a steel sbc 383 crank now im gonna assemble the all forged  383 with aluminum heads and twin t3 turbos. Got a donor truck with a 4 speed to test and tune it. Lots in the works this year.
