Auto body restoration/storage cart/dolly
« on: January 17, 2013, 01:28:03 AM »

So I spent some time looking around at these carts because I don't have the room in my garage to just set the car in the middle and leave it. I need to be able to roll it from one side to the other to work on both sides. here is the one I was thinking about.

I didn't want to spend $400+shipping on it and thought that I could build one for a lot less. Priced out some steel and was gonna spend way to much time and money welding it up. So being the budget minded person I am, I though I could build it out of wood.

So here is where the write up and price break down comes in.

4, 6" caster wheels = Free (got them from a local shop that was replacing there old ones) But you can get them from harbor freight for about $7 each

3, 4"x6"x8' = $37.79

8, 3/8"x5" lag bolts
16, 3/8"x2" lag bolts
1 pack of 25 3/8" washers $18.00

total spent $55.79

So here's a quick breakdown of how to get started.

Take 1 4x6 and cut 44" off one end you now have 2 pieces, 44", and a 52"

take your other 2 4x6 and cut 6" off each one, you now have 2, 90" pieces, and 2, 6" pieces

should look like this

started a rough assembly by just setting everything on top of each other

pulled a few more measurements, b4 I did my final dill and bolt together. I used a 1/4" drill bit and a 1" paddle bit to counter sink the washers and bolt heads so when I set the frame on the wood it wouldn't be sitting on the bolt heads and slip off if I pushed it.
here it is all squared up and bolted together. I used an electric impact gun to run the 5" lag bolts together so I wasn't sitting there for hours trying to just run 8, 5" lag bolts in.

So I flipped it over and set the wheels on. Set them back about 3" back from the end of the 4x6's so i didn't split out the end of them.

Now I set my 2, 6" blocks on the front and just used 4, 3" wood screws and tow nailed them to the cross beam.

had to pull the exhaust off so it didn't get pinched when I set the car down. Surprisingly enough the exhaust came off so easy. Like easier than any Honda. The bolts looked all rusty but came off nice and smooth.

with that done I lifted the car supported it on some jack stands, and rolled it under.

now I pulled my measurements off my 66 nova and I'm setting the rear of the car on the front leaf spring cradle thingy. And the front I'm just setting on the frame.
like this..

So with that all done I gave it a test roll today. Mind you I don't have a motor or transmission in this car and its pretty easy to roll. It takes a little more effort than I had hoped for, but its gonna work great for me.
And I did a quick ms paint for the people that are going to be building this for there Chevy II novas...

Hope this helps the budget minded people that aren't afraid to do about 2 hours work and save $400+

Trust me I'm thinking real hard about it. Didn't you use some home depot paint and thin it down and shoot it?

yep i used some rustoleum from home depot and thinned it down with mineral spirits.

Ive seen some people use that plastic dip stuff also and it looks pretty good. https://www.dipyourcar.com/home.php?cat=14
