My TrackRat civic build thread
« on: March 08, 2009, 08:34:47 AM »

So I guess this is the new HMT home now, huh? Well, here's my build again...

First off, I'm from norway, so my english sucks
Second, I'm not cornfuzed, that guy from the old site that everyone seemed to hate

I was lurking on the old forum since feb 06 and tried to suck up as much info as I needed to put my own turbo system together. I didnt know shit about turbo's or cars before I found this site, so this is my first turbo setup and motor build, but definately not the last. I really enjoy the idea of getting boosted for less than the price of a b-series header and be faster 0O

Anyway, here's some eyecandy:

Then onto my first turbo setup:
D16Z6, rebuilt with stock stuff
t3.42/.48
FMIC, backdoored
Homemade mani, charge pipes and dp
eGay bov, clamps and couplers
++

Something weird on the dyno. Had to pull way more timing than what I've seen others do. Tuned with crome free + freelog

Went to the circuit, and here's the result... Dont know if it was because I had hit the ground a couple of times with the dp, too high egt because of all the timing I had to pull,  poor welding or just too thin walls on the mani... Some bracing action...

So I bought ectune, already had a wb, made some detcans and went for it. Havent tried tuning myself before, so it was fun :p I'm still not sure on what knock sounds like, lol.

Some vids from the circuit:

So the stock block actually survived the season, I'd never would have thought that. I'll be using the block for some vitara's and fjt's custom i-beams this winter :)

Fartcan is gone, had to route the dumptube into the exhaust to pass inspections at the track. Also got a new turbo, a 46 trim t4/t04e with a small .48 a/r exhaust side. Hopefully it'll spool about as fast as the saab turbo, without the choking on top.

Had to bring out the welder again... Ext wg this time.

Fatty welds ftw O0

Vitara's next :)

Doesnt hav a engine hoist, but I borrowed this for free  :somb:

Pistons and rods

Went for a 0,08mm p2w clearance, or 0.003-0.0035" ... Going for max 300whp

Notching... Tried to mark it, but ended up eyeballing it... Hope its big enough.

Gapping the rings... Boring!

Cheapie ring compressor.  :somb:

Checking the clearances. Came out a bit loose. Thats a good thing for this use I suppose...?

Ported a little bit in the oil pump. I reused my old oil pump so didnt feel like filling the blind entrance behind the hex plug with epoxy.

Made some new oil lines. I'm sick of dealing with sensors behing the block, so I made this. Much easier :) Hydraulic hoses from work = free  :somb:

Mfactory lsd going in too. Never even opened a gearbox before, so I had to use the helms manual a lot :p

Motor coming home. Still snowing outside. Fuck

Oil cooler was a pain in the ass. Had to move the radiator to make room for the fittings. So I have like 1mm left before it hits the dp.

The car

Homemade sticker :1 Edit: I guess I have to dig up the tape and add an R now.

I HATE SNOW! Just waiting for the spring now... At least with the lsd I'm not getting stuck. Car seems to work fine, a little diesel'ish sound but I guess thats normal. I warmed it up and raped it pretty hard for the rings to seat, I'll just have to put some miles on it now before I take it to the tuner...

Edit:
So I editet my whole post now. Hope you're happy RICK P  :-*

very nice build.  And yeah, the vitara builds always sound a lot more like a diesel.  I have a friend who did a vitara build on his d16z6 and turbo'd it, the thing sounds awful but has decent power.

I'm lovin the bucket for pulling the motor. I have done that a couple times, the trick is to get the bucket high enough that it is at its furthest out point in the arc of travel, or it is always trying to pull the motor out into the firewall.

Solid project, good to see lots of pics.

awsome post. looks like a pretty good build you got going there. looks liek you only spend money on what was needed and didnt try and impress the HT crowd by buying uneeded baller parts, nice. but i would suggest you look into maybe a cheaper engine hoist ;)

Getting the motor out was easy, getting it back in was a bit worse, but it worked out OK. I did cheat a little with that chain thing you see in the pics, I dont know what is called... I lowered it straight down with that...

cant tell from the pics but are you running a flex pipe?

+1 our gonna want to get one if not.

Solid build though. You look like a pretty good driver. It was funny seein you overtake two wrx's back to back. I wish I had a track like that close.

The flexpipe is there, but its not easy to see it in the pics...

Here's my DP:

I think my manifold cracked because of shitty welds, way retarded timing (lots of heat) and my first DP was a bit off, so it hit hit the ground sometimes... It stopped cracking after I added the braces :)

Those video's were from my second trackday overall, first one turboe's so I really dont know what was up with all the others driving like that. I think they just put way too much money in their cars and are afraid of using them or something. I thought they should be way faster.

that is bad ass i track my car too!!

dude how much dose it cost to go out on a circuit for a day?

and where you at ? somwhere in europe?

You should bring the camera next time!

I live in Norway, Europe. The trackdays cost something like $30-120, it all depends on who's arranging them. I'm member in a few different clubs to get discount, though, it pays off  ():)

Yeah, the feeling of passing a ricer with a ten foot wing in a stock looking civic is fucking sweet! Now it sounds like a diesel at idle in the pits too, awesome!

I love my greasepit  :noel: The stuff under the car is like really thick oil. Its a PAIN working under the car, the stuff gets in your hair, in your face , neck and everywhere, and wont go away for days. But it keeps the rust away... I really hate the winters with snow, salt, rust, etc... Almost every car from the 90's and back are rust buckets. Living in california has got to be great.

There are quite a few people from here taking the trip down to the ring, but I've heard so many stories... If you wreck your car, they make you pay for the towing, fixing of the fender, and also the money they loose for closing the track when they fix it. I would have to drive very carefully, so I dont really see the point of taking that long trip... Maybe one day.

Sabine's awesome. Its funny to see her overtake bikes in a ford transit van, lol.

Well, havent really tried in this car, being a fwd, and that I dont rally it. :)

Glad to see you made it over man.  And I still love the heatsheild.  Most of the heat is always coming out of the manifold and turbine.

There's a few things since last update, but noting big...

Installed a solenoid for the ebc feature in ectune. I love that thing. Boost by gear FTW!

Made a new catchtank with bigger outlet for a bigger filter after I blew the filter off the last one, lol.

And yesterday I went to the dyno. Not so happy about the whp numbers, dont know whats up really. We tuned it up to 15 psi, and tried 18 psi, but the torque falls flat in the end, so after 6000 rpm, 15 psi and 18psi put out the same number. I mean I know the combination of log mani, .48 ar exhaust housing and full 2.5" exhaust makes a shitload of backpressure, but I was hoping for 250whp at least... I did install a camgear before I went to the dyno, and put the engine in correct mechanical timing, like JD were talking about in a thread on tho other forum, but I didnt have time to try other settings. That really bugs me now, cause I would like to se what happens with a little retard of the cam, but it'll have to do for now. I'll retune some time during the summer. Torque is great, though. So I think it'll do pretty good for my use :) 318 nm = 234ft-lb

Went to the track today for the first time this year and had a blast :) Here's a couple clips

Civic D16

D16 Civic Circuit

However, my cooling system doesnt do what its supposed to do... Most of the time I just had to drive around on 7 psi, because after a couple laps I would overheat on anything higher. I've tried quite a few different things, but I just cant seem to make it efficient enough. One solution would of course be to redo my whole setup and fit a fullsize radiator in there, but I'd rather not, because of the work and money that I'm not having time or money for right now...

This is how it looks today

My thoughts:
I made the fan shroud to let the fan draw air through all the surface of the radiator. However, in high speeds, the fan is doing nothing compared to all the air that is thrown in the face of the radiator, so is this shroud just doing things worse?
I dont have the stock bottom plate. Is this disturbing the air flow through the engine bay in some very bad way?
I use a Mishomoto radiator. Would buying a "name brand" radiator do anything other than hurting my pocket?
I tried shimming the hood, to let some of the hot air out, but it didnt make much of a defference, other than making a fucking sauna inside the cabin during a heat :p

Any help would be much appreciated!

Oh, and I finally got to fix my "sticker"  O0

do a compression test.  if ur car overheats like that chances are ur headgasket is toast.   i ran into the same problem with my build single cam back in the day. turns out the headgasket was junk.  i put a new one in and it solved the problem.   i even hacked up my bumper like u did thinking it would help.;

def investigate the headgasket tho  could also explain ur shitty power numbers.

if its not the HG try to block off the open side of the engine bay to force the air through the rad...  the air will take the path of least resistance

looks fun!

Just did a compression test and it turned out good. #1-3 160psi, #4 165psi. No oil in water, no water in oil, no pressure in the water, and no smoking or oil on the plugs, so I dont think its the head gasket.

If I block the other part of the intake, I would have to block the first half of my intercooler, dont know if that is a good idea?

Forgot to mention, there is no sign of overheating with normal to hard driving on the road. On the dyno the temp was right on through the whole session. Its just after a couple hard laps on anythin above 10 psi there's a problem. If I run 7 psi, I can do 6-8 hard laps before I need to take it easy.

Anyone have experience with running clean water and water wetter? Does it work any better than water + antifreeze?
