I've had my sights on an 80's/early 90's nissan pickup to daily for a while now.  I'd much rather slap an rb20 in one of those than my car.  11 psi STOCK turbo rb20 spins 1,2,3 from a dig.  Good enough for a daily driver.  =D  Seriously, i need something like that in my life.   Right now i'm ready to go drifting.

Rundown for shit car:

Head gaskets
Cam seals (maybe....)
Fluids
Oil feed source.  Either drill/tap or sandwich plate.  I dont care which.  I'll flip a coin.
Eye bolts for seat harnesses.
Finish wiring up the wiper motor correctly
Get shit to finish water sprayer for heat exhangers.....  Need more washer nozzles.  COuld always go get some ricer ones for like $5 at walmart or something.

Coil flip not needed.  Center most port is filtered oil.   Other port is unfiltered.....i think.  Sweet.
One less thing to worry about.





Get 90* or 180* adapters, done and done.

Didn't want to sit around bored on my day off constantly peeking out the window looking for a fed ex truck so i built something to kill deer and other small animals with.  Filling it with concrete when i have time.  =D  Fits nice and close to the bumper.  I have to trim it, cap it, finish welding.  it doesn't unbolt.  Straight welded to the chassis.   I'm stuck running the stock bumper which is fine by me.  Looks good imo.















Luckily this was bent close enough.   Im surprised this all fit without incident.

Like i said, needs some finishing up.  For sure will add elbow gussets and at least a pair of triangular ties to keep it from shifting or breaking during lovey rubbings.

Why didn't you make it bolt in?

Because the stock bumper support and hardware wasn't included and nobody near me has.   I would have welded the tube structure to the parts that slide into the frame rails after plating them.  Then direct bolt-in using oem with my shit.   

Verdict was "fuck it, weld it to the frame and take more time setting your load leveler up correctly for engine moves....."

It's only tacked.  If i welded it firm as is it would probably not serve its intended purpose if i hit something.

Just ready to get the motorset back together tomorrow.  If i have time to get/rig some fittings up i'll do that also so i can pre test cranking with the engine on the ground to make sure oil is going to the right places this time.   ::)

I MIGHT have enough wire on all my used mig spools to finish up the tubing.     I doubt it but we'll see.  Have all my s13, ms/stand alone related vg30 crap for sale on that "pay for shipping and my next case of beer" price and STILL have all those parts a month later.  People will buy the shit out of injectors pushing 450cc and up though.  1st world problems:  the road to dirty 3rds, possibly 4ths.


Edit:  10/30 

longblock is back together aside from the intake mani,  oil pan, accessories and turbo bits.  Due to being broke i'll just leave the turbo on.  End play isn't hitting housings.  I'll rebuild it when i can.  If it shits apart i'll just squeeze in some O.T. at work doing everyones dishes for em so they can be lazy and go home early.  :)  I'll buy another .57 from the same store because those nogs are rad.

You need something SIMPLE that runs, lol. Hate to say it, but a junkyard 4.8l or 5.3l would have been a much better choice.

The thing is these engines are VERY simple.  THe varations between models and lack of interest is why i have a hard time finding answers to difficult questions.

Oil pressure sending unit port became mysteriously unclogged about 5 minutes ago.  Was stuck with a few questionable mods to get a fitting on my filter housing and figured i'd try compressed air ONE more time.  It worked.

Drove it around a bunch today. Maybe 45 mins of driving.  I have a sync loss issue during datalogging so didn't change the tune. This is after software update version 2.5.  2.0 didn't do this.

No pull videos because i had to watch my laptop and the road at the same time but it's not quite dirty 3rds.  I could stand to add a little bit more fuel  It's pretty lean under wot out of boost.  and i'm thinking the entire intake system is adding to whatever i didn't do tuning-wise acting as a big restriction until that turbo gets up to speed.

This happened AFTER i hit my head on the roof, lost sync during a log again and just figured parking it so we both can live to fight another day was the best plan.

This is the plan if my turbo ends up creeping higher than i'm able to tune for.  Cracked way the hell open i was hitting 12.9 psi (where i set it) boost cut.  it'll still climb in rpm but slowly because 10* of timing gets pulled.

JD, check the date.  That's not my work.   I have a guy down towards the beach who's gonna hook some shit up when i bring the car down there for more tuning.   If i dont have a wastegate by then i'm sure he can hook me up with a used one for a good price.  Very legit dude.

No sir.  I'll get on that when i can.  It's on the ground in my driveway still tacked up.  The way i was driving i SHOULD have had it welded up and installed.  Lol. I tacked it on the car with my shit bumper on.  Fits nice and tight.  I know after it's fully welded my fenders and shit wont rattle around as much.  2 zip ties and 3 bolts per side is all that's keeping em on the car.....

Edit: bumper is in place.  Nothing from the outside but here's a backside view.  It fits super tight just like intended.  Next go will be with summit ordered .120" wall dom tubing and i'll do all the pipes up on a manual bender. It's a matter of dough to buy tools.  Trust me, i want them but if they dont pay for themselves it's not in the cards so i'll need side work lined up first!


Black friday update:   Drove her again.  Hood off pulling up to the gas station people staring and shit.   I adjusted my wastegate a LITTLE, burnt the fuck out of my fingers accidentally touching the turbine after doing maybe 5-6 pulls around the hood warming it up.  She was at a healthy 177* coolant temp with fan on with that puny ass radiator.  Now she makes 5psi at about 3500rpm.  Slowly cranking the wastegate until i'm making boost lower and lower in revs.

It draws so much vac, check what happens to my volvo couplers.  Fuck these things.  Replacing them asap!



Buddy of mine was like "interesting isn't the word i'd be using to describe that" verbatim.  I dont take this car seriously.  Nobody does and nobody should.  it's all in good fun.   I love driving her.  Few warm up runs.  It's terrible quality.   Hate on my prepaid phone and me not being man enough to steer with my knee while i shift.  She doesn't torque steer.  Just sweatpants on woodgrain aint safe.

Anyone on MS1X got a decel/accel screen shot i can kinda use as a starting point?  Throttle response is good but i boost harder in third, fourth and fifth than i do in 1st/2nd.....   I had this fucker sideways in fourth gear.  I was just upshiftting after a first gear burnout into a corner and when it stepped out in fourth i was shocked.  5 psi peaking 8 average.  Fucking stump puller.  I love this goddamned car.  VIVA LA VG30ET!!!!!! 10-15 psi is gonna be an animal.  Can't wait to get to the dyno for tuning.  When i get a fuel level gauge, extended front lca and a rebuild on this turbo (puking oil into intercooler because shaft play fail on clogged feed port) it's going dooooownnnnnnnnnn! PORN CELEBRATION!

Broke front studs in the parking lot at work and had to leave it there for a week.  Fixed it, lug nuts on spacers were backing out....  Good times.  Did 4 out of 12.  Still got 3 more corners left to replace the old studs on.  Removing them aint shit.  PUtting new ones in is a pain in the ass

Ordered a netami boost gauge and equus 0-80 ohm fuel level gauge last night.

coolant system would do fucking splendid with a surge tank on it to pull all the air out of the system.  I'm really tired of doing it.

not much else been going on.  Boost is the same as it was because i lost a week due to the car sitting 17 miles away with me unable to work on it.

Hose clamp on my compressor housing wore a nice hole in my radiator.   

I went to a u pull today thinking a maxima one wouldn't be hard to clearance as well as shorten up the coolant piping.  Nay.  Too wide.


I have to return it before work tomorrow for "store credit" then keep harassing them til either a stock 240sx shows up or an rx7 shows up.  FC radiator would work perfect and i know they cool really well.  Also have angled inlets/outlets for slant mount so i can move it away from turbo heat.   After enough burping my temps stopped getting up there.  Water from old radiator was brown from all the scaling/rust that had been free'd up from the block jackets during heat cycles and cavitation.  Probably didn't help.

Lazy with the pictures.  I kno dis.    Boost and fuel level gauges showed up.  I paid maybe $37 for both of them together which wasn't bad considering i need a few extra things to install them.

Ok, well solutions.  I'm off this weekend and should be back driving then.  Long list of shit to do.  Pulling all 4 wheels and greasing up the studs is a must.  I had plans to handle that, install my new gauges and proper harness install but again, radiator. 

I re-fabbed my upper and lower water pipes into one piece.  Only 8 clamps to worry about.   intercooler pipe parts didn't get so lucky because i cannot weld aluminum.   3 piece hot pipe, 3 piece cold pipe.  Recirc/blow off has been relocated to the cold pipe and i have to leave that bitch on for a few 100 more miles.  Enough talk, picture time.



Radiator was moved forward several inches.  The lower bracket isn't there.  Waiting to order an rx7 aluminum (yes, still) before i tie the tension rods together with a bar and add the brackets to it for the radiator.  Makes sense.





New upper water neck.  It is aluminized steel.  This shit is less than ideal but if i need this stuff fabbed in aluminum whoever does it can go off my original bends.   I like stuff where it is at this point.







New hot pipe.  BOV is next to the frame rail on that first bend that comes off the intercooler.   Trust me, i wanted this tube patch welded and fuck a bov but extending the life of this turbo is a must for a couple more months....





Pre-paint mockup of the new hot pipe.  NOt too long.   Maybe 2.5'.   I wanted to put the intercooler between the turbo and radiator parallel to the ground buuuuut i was worried about having to cut the hood.  I'm open tub so this angled front mount setup should work ok if i bleed it and duct it well.

Not much else going on at the moment.  Easy shit.  Just taking forever because my work schedule isn't as convenient as my last job was.

So some things have happened since my last post....

Radiator fill cap ended up being lower than the motor.  Needed my car asap and couldn't do the whole surge tank thing just yet so i removed the oem coolant temp gauge sending unit, tapped the hole to npt and put a ball valve and 90* elbow up in there.



RHMT worthy yeah?





Ghetto bleeder works great.  Temps stayed 2* cooler than they did with the old oem 240 radiator cruising.  175*.  Bout 180-190* creeping around town with the single 10" e fan on....

Then i got complacent after just one week back in the saddle.





Got a tow home from work two days later.  Belt broke backing out of a spot doing like 8mph

When i started tearing into the car i found this......



Heatshield tab on the mani was milling the crank pulley.  To be fair i did turn my decel fueling time to 2 seconds before it starts decaying.  That means timing is retarded but i'm still shooting fuel to the engine til that timer reaches zero and starts pulling fuel.   In and out of boost was near instant though.  Great throttle response.  Immense manifold heat, enough to warp it.  It was fine before i fucked with my tune for the sake of "lets have some fun".

And now here it sits til the weekend or friday if it's nice and i'm not dogshit tired after work.  All i gotta do is pull the covers and the rockers off and can free the heads to get a damage report.  I have Z cams, not truck cams so chances are good i have to do some piston sanding and order or junkyard liberate some valves......

Ordered the stuff needed to get it back running last night. 

Death toll:

2 intake valves
exhaust manifold (re-doing it.  Got flanges to make it 3pc, still gay ass log manifolds tho.  I'll explain why they are homosex in a little bit either that or it's my injector grouping)
Timing belt

That's it.  Head gaskets had to get ordered obviously so i went ahead and got the whole top end set.  New valve stem seals because i can, new exhaust manifold gaskets, all that fun shit.  I got a garmin gps that's going to get integrated into the cluster i'm building.  I can't afford racepack or stack shit so making do.  Fo sho want the megaviewer one day but first thing is first.  This car has to stop breaking so i can save money for parts i really, really want or need.  Onto pics.

Now i have a flashlight shining on the back of cylinder 5's intake valve.  The gap you see is roughly 1.5mm.  Cylinder 6 had a 2mm gap.  I'm going to scotch bright my pistons when i feel like it to check those to see if they need sanding down/deburring but from what i can see things look fine. 



Next up we have the exhaust valves.  The front 4 cylinders have this shit going on.  Explain this to me.  I'm thinking it's an issue with the rear cylinders having the longest exhaust path and the front ones having a shorter path but the pulses anal sexing eachother is causing all this ugly shit on the back side of the exhaust valves. 





 ???

Mostly together....well mocked up.  Clamps and gaskets are missing here and there.  Engine is complete aside from torquing the harmonic balancer and 2 bolts in the alternator bracket...    Think i got the belt tension right this go around.  Had it right the first time.  Fucked it up last time i tore the motor down due to oiling issue....  Full retard.  Never go there.



I got a pig nose bumper for this.  Another on the way.  Hopefully a lip to follow.   As much as i need to go aftermarket front bumper (for room/proper dom tube crash bar) i can't at the moment.  Dont have the puzzle pieces nor funds...



Hacked the mani all the fuck up.







Ended up with this.







Gonna figure out how to mount this.  inlet/outlet are in line with my frame rails and strut frame tubes so that's a problem.  Might hang onto it for another project.  Current fmic works fine, even configured like this....



Not sure if this is a problem....



I have exhaust wrap that's not frayed/fagile i can use in some spots but not the funds to buy two rolls and heat foil to keep things calm, cool and collective. 

Not sure what is going to happen.  Probably lots of fun before it breaks again....
