Title: Trevor's Canadian D Build saga now post pinks all out *updates 7/28/10*
Post by: trevor72 on March 09, 2009, 02:13:16 PM
Here we are in the new home....RHMT

My white car got rear ended and i bought another one (a black SI) so it got the turbo instead.

I hurt the motor in the black car this weekend on my road trip to see some buddies in PG, so back to driving Snow White (recently released from the body shop).

Pics below Enjoy and comment.

back up and racing in 2 hours

After almost 4 months and 10,000 km of beating on it, something finally let go on my way up this weekend.....
Seems to still be fireing on all holes, just some are weaker than others. Oh and the typical big time puff puff out the valve cover hose. Betting cracked pison/ringland! Opinions?

Kinda hard to tell in the vid, but the second one where it sounds like a lopy cam... well its' not the cam.

Pistons got rings and dropped into the bores and all the rotating assembly is now tightened up as of last night

Checking Ring gap... came out to .018" top and .022" second out of the box seemed more than big enough. (.0065/in and .0075/in resp.)

[edit]  I also have a few pics of the car wash "hot tank" session, and the ball hone goodness, if i can find out how to get them off this pos phone.

ah k been a while and its been going slow but its finally coming together, cleanup-ported the intake and sized it for a gsr TB, also go the right studs in and the head on an torqued.  bastards at our parts store wont sell  aircraft paint stripper over the counter anymore and won't give it to me under either.. fuckers.  so it looks like it might have to go back together with its sketchass half peeled valve cover.  anyways... on to some pics

Thanks for some ideas I'm building d16z6 w/ y8 head w/ vitaras w/ z6 mani and w/ h23 tb for now.

What intake mani are you using? (it looks like z6)

What is the bore size on that GSR TB is it bigger than 62mm?  ;D

i wanted a 12 valve so bad but i couldn't find one local that i liked or was cheap enough.  ended up buying a suburban 6.5 instead.  sucks about the cummins.

as far as those letters, i'm pretty sure the crank code is on the flywheel end of the block and there is 5 letters, one for each of the mains.  can you zoom out a little on that picture or tell us what surface that is?  looks like on the head under the vtec solenoid.  might be the cam bearings but idk.

Levi I'm sorry dude but you just don't understand.  Please don't post stupid shit in my thread and please keep your un-knowledgeabilities to yourself.

Same motor same tune that ran fine for 10,000 plus km.  no changes except for a slightly bigger TB and a point less compression,

you kept asking about my AFR's, and that has nothing to do with it.   I likely made an error setting the timing because it was my ride home and i hadn't eaten all day and nobody was helping me.

Vids and pics to follow, head is off and nothing is visibly wrong YET.

ported tb, port matched IM, cleaned up head too? not knowing what your afr's are and setting your timing at more than 14*

then rippers with no real tuning......

same hack tune that you ran last year?

It is no more a hack tune then any other "base map" it was an off the shelf tune, iirc "BBKA" did in fact build that tune on a dyno (Urban you are an "OG" and supposedly have been here since around the time that BBKA made that tune, so you should be able to tell me if in fact it was.), and went 12's on it. For base map sake, the motors are the same (yes I am fully aware that even identical motors are not the same when it comes time to do a final tune). As Trevor mentioned it went 10,000Km's before it crushed the ring lands, in that 10,000km's it got good fuel efficiency out of boost, had no driveablity issues, and took a hell of a beating. Sounds like a decent base map tune to me, obviously on the edge of what you can run in a stock d. A "hack" tune spits rods out the side of the block, I know this I am a hack and that is what my tunes do.

I know this I am a hack

In my opinion, when you go from a stock motor to a "built" (in this case being rods/pistons)  different tuning is needed.

Dont get me wrong I cant tune worth shit. I couldnt even get the stumble out of my car at 2000rpm no matter what I tried.

either way shit is broke, and it doesnt seem too bad.

time to rip apart and get a new piston or 2

Trevor, I didn't realize you had been running 5's this entire time.  :o

That in its self may have been partially to blame for the ring lands in the stock motor.

I just got a txt from Trevor, he just ran a 14.27@100.6 mph as you see it there. Still running the BBKA tune @10psi with 14degrees base timing. Obviously needs some traction, it was on the street tires you see above.

i'm betting no, if i had a wideband, i'd at least attempt to change the map to suit the build

I think he was borrowing an LM1, but doesn't have a chip burner, or anyway to change the tune regardless. Trevor will have to answer that when he gets home from the track.

Went to Ashcroft today.

All of the runs following the first of the day (14.27 @ 100.6mph) were not as quick, but it did go 101.54mph on the second hit after sitting for a while. Runs following that were too hot i think.  Everything was heat soaked by the time i got up to the lanes to run.   Leaving with any launch rpm or quick shits = blowdatiresaway. Soft launches (~3-3500) and slow soft shifts = having to climb the rpm actually made the car slower by a bunch. But....all in all, had a blast today, enjoyed the 30*C (86F) weather and the fact that i raced it in the exact same trim as driving to and from the track.

I have a WB i will borrow and report back, though i checked it last year and the car looked very happy throughout the pulls i made.  IIRC 1:10.8 was the richest it got, and it was pretty stable around the high 1:11's.  It sure would be nice to get free log to work, since i have the data logging port.

so trevor in his haste used a shitty chinese impact to put a crank pulley bolt on without locktite.

it fell off and he couldnt recall exactly WHERE the fucking thing fell off so we brought him a chinese balancer that didnt fit his belt.( an hour and a bit drive)

so we went to the side of the highway and searched for about an hour(3 of us) then we said fuck it we need to get home. so we left and he ended up cutting his belt to fit.

Shit works now but in need of a d-series balancer.

thanks

Chad i don't recall to be honest with the intercooler.... i do remember carefully measuring with the bumper off a bunch of times before i chose my poison.  IIRC its a 24ish wide by 9" high by 3" deep. I liked it cause i could keep some of the rad support brace.  The bumper needed minimal trimming, behind the fog light pockets.

What exactly are you welding in the diff.?

I assume this would make both axles full engaged at all times.

This car only being used drag racing or are you planning to DD this?

Wouldn't you be going through tires when doing a lot of turns?

Any chance of seeing the limiting straps being made on this build?

I can not find the the old build thread on these straps.

Thanks

So far I'm impressed with the injectors, even on a basemap they are great.  Boost has only gone to 10psi so far on conservative setting. Until Thursday where Leed takes over.

So apparently he still isn't there.  I told him to leave yesterday after work but I think he is continueing to be shitty with that girl of his.

He was supposed to tune all day then dyno tune during the night.

Hopefully he has enough time to get it tuned for pinks tomorrow.

See you niggers down there tomorrow night

I received a txt @ 12:30am, saying that it made 305whp @ 18psi, but had wastegate issues all night, and 18psi is as much as they could get out of it. Hopefully Leed or Trevor will chime in and give us more detail then that.

So it looks like mid 11's for pinks vs the mid 10's we were hoping for.

Dose anyone know what spring he has in his wg? I know that when I had that mother fucken bad ass og bosst controler in my car it would only bleed so much air and then it just wouldent make any more boost. It was like the hole was too small or something. But that boost controler is a fucken trooper though!! Hope to see some good numbers from this slut of a car of his!!!

It is a 10psi spring. Maybe someone has a bigger spring and leed and trevor could do a little street tuning for some extra power.

Well I'm out, got taken down by a 12.00 cummins CR.  Rich is gay and arm drops faster than a chineese hooker gives head.  Last go to round didnt' get up on the anti lag in time to launch... left instinctively on the drop.  We did get our beer cups signed for shits and will later sell on ebay to fun further efforts :P

anyways, it made a best 60 foot of 1.72, and a best run of 12.57@111 torque steering like a mother fucker on the welded diff/no power steering.

willl post slips when i get back,

Had a blast, didn't win, lots of rhmt'ers down here, BIG thanks to all who helped, from free tranny to my motivator and my super tunner dude and everyone in the middle!!

ps levi i had three hours of sleep cause i was putting in a tranny i built the same day.. on my lunch break.  flat rate on the trailer under a street light in my apartment parking lot :P

It all held together.  So yeahh,,.... i can return some axles and shit to pay rent!  Nite fags... slips and pics to come.

interesting you didn't explode the spider gears like i did, but instead went straight for the FD.  by the way i have an extra 4.25 setup if you need it, diff and all

Good work Trevor.

thanks haha

Wheel hop?

Thats what I was thinking too as soon as I saw it.

its possible.... it smashed this ring gear the weekend i put the limiting straps on... and it broke nice and hard...didn't even roll out of the beam.  but to the point the slicks weren't balanced, so tire shake is possible, no wheel hop.

nice

hmm well no spiders here to break..
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi134.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fq83%2Ftrevor_72%2FEGCivic%2FDSC06291.jpg&hash=d8bd721ddcac4a02fe6c6ccbc363cf1bbde8b15e)

but i'm pretty sure the backup tranny just broke the diff pin/spider assembly.

I have also lended my thoughts to the idea that welding the diff with the ring gear on brittled that bitch up... still rock solid gear set, thanks again chad.

it is quite possible with how much weld you have on there that the heat cycle hurt the teeth on the final drive.

+1 it reduces the shock on the drivetrain when you launch since the "slack" is taken up.

here was my solution....pull one of the better bearing off one of the other diffs :D

a little heat here and there with some household tools, bearing swap bammo...

after a hot water wash, some shavings came out of this bearing too, but at least it is smooth and doesn't have any crunch to it!

a regular 3 jaw puller would have gotten those bearings off.  you just have to fenagle it to get the jaw of the puller behind the bearing.  I usually use a large hammer and 2 screwdrivers to get enough space then let the tool do the work

I dont have a number off hand but BC bearing or similar will match one up based off the size. The only difference is they dont have the flat seal/cover over the rollers like the OEM Honda ones do but they fit perfect.

So its been a long time since i updated my build thread.  But here we go..... Blakie the super honda is currently blown up. but it seems like an easy repair.

I came down with Levi Sewell and Passenger Dave for the dyno days with my own car.  After watching levi's car on the dyno Sewel and i jumped in my car for a bunch of really good solid street pulls in the dirty back roads of Lynden WA.

The car started smoking on decel on the last couple pulls and then all the time till there was a big stumble and the car died, right on Hwy 539.

So after a couple months, i finally had time and money to look into what i thought was a 'blown turbo'.

Pulling the turbo reveiled a perfect turbo, as it was received from dvst8r.  Did a compression test and saw what i was afraid of.  40/45/145/50 psi.

Now with a shot of oil in each hole, I get 135/135/155/135 psi.

Fingers are crossed for just rings.  But even if its a set of pistons and a ball hone, no big  deal.  Pics when they are available.

Any ideas why it blew? Were you purposely trying to just make high numbers on it or just beat the piss out of it, or do you just have bad luck it seems with this build.

Where is JD, and his piston diagnoses?

It appears that an HX-35 @ 24lbs on FJ long rods on 94 pump = ring land crusher.

STD = standard bore = sloppy cock pistons?

Anyone notice how there all cracking in the same spots, close to the valve reliefs. :noel:

Confirmed: D-Series + HX35@25psi + Pump Gas = Sad Vitaras

I'm wondering if this was due to us hitting the boost cut repeatedly. We smacked it pretty hard about 10 times. I have logs from all of the runs, afr was good and theres nothing it in for timing(literally nothing, so little i'm suprised it even fired).  The only other thing i can think of is that the gas in it was old and smelt bad. Trevor said it was like 6-8 months old, and we put some fresh stuff in it.

I've had one other engine pop on me while tuning, but it was a bone stock b16 that was boosted for like 6 years and was on 28lbs.  It popped after it smacked the boost cut repeatedly. We put another bone stock b16 in it, it has about 40 passes on it,   and never had another problem.

Even though theres a boost cut, it still can still boost past the cut for a split second.

This makes me  :-[

Nope they were air tight :P  I don't know what the actual ptw was but it was nothing crazy.  The block had 180,000 original km (112,000miles) and barely any ridge at the top of the bore and even then it cleaned up with a ballhone..

The only other thing i can think of is that the gas in it was old and smelt bad. Trevor said it was like 6-8 months old, and we put some fresh stuff in it.

Sewell's right it could have been partly older fuel, but what was left in the tank from before if i remember right should have been c16, but maybe not, maybe it was 91 since that's usually what i put in it when i just daily it.  Also does WA even sell 94? I know it got premium in Lynden, but i think it was 92.  Looking back this was dumb of me. I should have just put the race gas in from the get go and figured out something street-able later.

Boost cut probably didn't help i guess.

I'm trying to get a hold of FJ for some new vitaras and keep with our OG sponsors? but he's not returning my call, may have to just buy online and hope he sends usps.
