Title: New econo car - broken POS - build up thread
Post by: random-strike on July 23, 2017, 01:02:23 AM
Got this little guy to drive around. Kinda fun. Supercharger sounds cool. 30+mpg on highway.

Pretty sure it has stage 2 kit. Has the pulley but it's hard to tell if it has the injectors too. They look like the gm stage 2 ones.

Don't know how I can tell if the computer is tuned or not

confirmed it has the gm stage 2 kit on it.

it has some aftermarket muffler i dont like. too loud.

Stock-ish muffler and a loud valve cut out!

I've wondered about those. Does it feel cheap inside/interior? How is handling?
Title: Re: New econo car
Post by: ratcityrex on July 25, 2017, 01:39:10 PM
Always wanted to go beat on one for the day. I've "heard" the transmissions were built with glass. But whatever.
Title: Re: New econo car
Post by: random-strike on July 25, 2017, 02:20:39 PM
It handles very well actually. Kinda like a 3 series non m car.
I don't think the trans are glass is has built in no lift shift and able to handle the gm stage 3 under warranty which is usually like 280whp if I remember right.

The interior isn't that bad as long as you aren't expecting luxury. I like it. The seats are good even the none Recaro.

I honestly really like the car with the stage 2 is feels like a 14flat deal. From what I've seen ppl are trapping 100-103.

Stock they are running 14s trapping 98-99.

From what I've read weak point is warping brake rotors but once our get some AutoZone babies on there they are fine. Most other complaints are about interior pieces flaking off paint lol.

Overall I really like it lol

Just drove to gym love this littl car lol.

The sound system is cool has built in sub in the trunk it's all pioneer I bet back in the day it was the shit.

My only complaint is the loud muffler to hear the sc whine you gotta dip into it enough that the exhaust is blasting

the LSJ is a badass engine for what it is. forged pistons and big oil piston coolers.

at least i read they have forged pistons stock. not sure tho

supposedly: 2.0L has forged crank, rods and pistons.

This little car rips man. I think it'll run 13s. I bet it'll trap over 100 for sure

had to work on the car a bit but nothing major.

the intercooler h/e pump stopped working. i was like damn the car is feeling slow as shit wtf i can't be getting this used to it. but the damn pump was not working, i got under there and tapped it with a hammer a bunch and it started working again.

since i got it had a hesitation at low rpms and a little bit in between shifting. well its been getting worse so i changed the plugs.

its supposed to have 1 step colder plugs and gaped down with the stage 2 kit. looks like it had the stockers with a huge gap...

the new colder gaped down plugs made it run a lot smoother.

also bought a walker quiet flow 2.5 in/out muffler to put on it. this loud shit muffler i just can't stand. its getting put on next week. should be happy with it.

3 days for a stupid cps?

Not suprised the sti is slow. I saw some kid fucking off in an evo 10 last week launching it at every stop light. That heap was sooooooo slowwwwwwwwwwww. I think it would have gotten rekt by a stock maxima. Hopefully his tune was fucked up or something.

Sensor is a pita to put in.sits behind starter which sits behind intercooler pump

I put it in but haven't put it all back together yet lol

VQ35 maxima's are fun! I had one that ran 12.9 @ 106mph with bolt ons, et streets, and weight reduction.

I like the cobalt's too.

Head is getting rebuilt now the cam I was looking at wasn't right. Guy didn't know what he was talking about.

Very hard to find stock cams. There is a complete high mile head on eBay I could buy for 350 and just use cams

should be able to get it together soon.

i had to end up buying a used head off ebay just for the cams. plus one of the journals got buggered up and i didnt want to take a chance. so i'm going to have to have this ebay head rebuilt and then i can put the car back together.

got a few goodies in the mail, ching chong meow long tube and downpipe and a big front mount h/e. and a new dual pass end plate.

i like it a lot as well.

its gutless compared to the hemi jeep but i'm hoping this bitch lasts a long time. the jeep went a lot of miles but i had to fix a lot of shit.

i also got a refund to my paypal for the cylinder head i bought, don't know what the fuck is going on now. the tracking # still says package will be here tomorrow.

I don't have any complaints about the power but I didn't have a hemi keep before hand. I've got 100k on mine with no problems yet.  I wanted a 4runner or a Tacoma but people wanted twice as much for more miles and older cars.

Yea I was going to gasket match it and call it good. It's amazing the power the engine makes with Suh tiny ports. Especially the exhaust. It's cartoonish small

i worked on it yesterday. almost done. been kinda a pita but not too bad i guess. just kinda lame having to take so much shit off to time the motor.

had to take off the motor mount belt tensioner and front timing cover. i thought i had it timed right without taking off the cover and making sure on the crank sprocket... but its a good thing i did because it was a tooth off LOL....

i might try and finish it today. the only thing left thats a bitch is one of the exhaust bolts is stuck on around the resonator behind the cat. i got one off with wd40 and an impact, but the other one just wasted the nut so i'm just going to cut/grind it off.

Right now I think the route for me is some stock muffler off a V8 that can support 250+HP And be quiet. The hemi Jeep's have a small muffler that is quiet and they make 345/345

It's fuckkking loud lol. Sound terrible too.

can runs great. LOUD AF. very obnoxious.

getting a new muffler put on this week. waiting on exhaust shop.

had some coolant leak out of the intercooling system, couple of the clamps on the end plate needed re tightened.

i love the car again. except the noise.... lol can't wait till its silent but deadly with only s/c whine.

the car rips tho with this exhaust setup. just cant' take the noise. makes that horrible buzzing

Throw a glasspack on it in line with the muffler. It'll knock a lot of that down.

Ive got a glass pack and a dynomax ultra flo muffler on my porsche and its loud as fuck.

You probably just need a muffler that's chambered better and not just straight through.

i have a chambered muffler on it now. but its one of the ones that is actually 2.5" inside. and not just the inlet/outlet. my definition of loud might be different than other peoples. lol

i added another muffler a while back. car is quiet. took resonator off

no cat, no res, two inline mini chambered mufflers. very quiet. i like it.

had a clunk for a while, had to replace the sway bar end links. now it has the normal dash slamming, but less front suspension clunk. it probably needs all new suspension stuff and probably steering too.

I've got a cherry bomb glass pack thing in place of a resonator and then a summit chambered 2.25 in/out muffler. It's a little loud, but not bad cruising around town. Counting on the eventual turbo install to quiet it down a bit more.

as predicted i'm totally fucked, cops can't make out license plate from security camera, the hearing aid place the guy went into can't give out his information because of hipaa.

can't get info from hearing aid place without a warrant, can't get a warrant or give out a ticket without his information.

my only option is to try and find him myself which i could clearly id his car if i see him driving around. fairly small town...

tired of this bullshit.

You can try his insurance 1st. It depends on if they want to be dicks about it and if he admits fault.

If they give you a hard time you will have to go through yours and let them fight it out.

went to local body shop, they're writing up estimate.

i had him write down every little thing that could possible be caused by the hit and run. the exhaust is tweeked to the side, you can see on the exhaust tip where it was pressed against the bumper and now its push off to the side and it rattles.

the bumper gaps are slightly off, there is some other gaps by the drivers door and around the back little window that may or may not have been there before.

while we where looking at it, i noticed a small dent and two big rub marks THAT WERE NOT THERE A COUPLE DAYS AGO on the opposite side rear quarter. which means another person hit my car with their door or something and took off.

i'm so sick of stupid people, this is why i do not drive expensive new cars anymore. they just get ruined by fuck tards and a lot of the time there is nothing you can do about it except constantly fix it yourself

started claim with insurance and they accepted liability. going to try and get a few bucks for diminished value. i have a friend who works at a car dealership and he wrote me up some docs with a trade in value for both wreck/no wreck.

~3500 no wreck and ~1500 with wreck on history

i'm going to press them for a better rental car they want to put me in one of those $20 a day shit boxes. maybe i can get a v6 camaro out of it or something.

was last day of racing at PIR. i was busy all day and evening and didnt have time to prep or anything so i just drove there and ran it a few times.

i was kinda disappointed it was slower than i expected after all the roll racing ive done with it.

quickest et was 14.5 which i'm not worried about because with 40psi in the tires i couldn't get a decent launch and it wheel hopped really bad
but my fastest trap was only 97. something.

i was expecting over 100mph. it was about 65f outside so not really hot.

my dad has a ls1 m6 camaro and he barely pulled on me, and i trapped 104 in it. so i was expecting to be a lot closer. on the way home after driving down the highway it felt noticeably faster. i guess it was heat soaked from sitting in line at the strip.

i was planing on brining a cooler with some bags of ice to stick on the s/c when i ran that would've made a difference but didnt have time.

I bought a security bit set with the right bit and I still can't get it off...  Two of the bolts are striped from previous owner or whatever.... Other two are iffy but look fine. This bit doesn't get a real good grip on it

Badically I'm going to take the blower off and weld some bolts on top of those ones and get them out thato you way.

Usually easier than drilling and tapping I hate doing that

have it planned to do this weekend.

father in law has a nice mig and shop.  i don't feel like digging out my harbor freight arc welder, and all my sticks are probably old and won't work very well anyways.

uggggggggg

i'm glad i bought the regular allen head replacement bolts

These are those going lame security bolts

The nit is mt-2

Mortorq bullshit.

It's like a shoot screwdriver.

A regular torx would be better.

I got Allen head replacements.

put pulley on today.

was a huge pita because i broke off a allen head wrench in one of the bolts holding down the s/c. i didnt think i put them on very tight before, but i used the ball side of a allen wrench and sure as shit pop broke off.

no drill bit known to man would get into that bitch

cobalt, carbide, titanium nothing.

finally got that bolt out with one of those old gator grip sockets lol.

instead of welding on a bolt to the wasted pulley bolts i just used a grinder to make a notch then hit it a few times with a punch worked like a charm.

those security bolts had every thread covered in loctite lol....

i put a tiny drip of blue loctite on the bolts.... tiny...

i used a pair of vice grips with a rag around them to hold pulley still while i tightened bolts

Car definitely runs stronger with 2.8 compared to 3.06

It's really rainy out but I was seeing 17.5-18psi at upper rpms

One thing I noticed is that with the 3.06 pulley i saw 17deg advance at upper rpms wot.

I tried to look and I think I saw 14 in 2nd upper rpms

I can't find a KR pid that works it should be fine

The car wasn't fully warmed up and it was about 40f outside might have something to do with it

The 2.8 pulley made a pretty noticable difference

Car runs great I just miss the v8 sound after driving my dad's z28 around.

You get to hear the cool noises without flooring it. I gotta dip into it in my Cobalt a bit to hear the supercharger.

Its because it looks like a Cavalier..Haha my mom had one, it was the  biggest pile of shit ever. At least if it was a srt4 it would have decent build quality. I swear, all the gm interiors feel like they are going to fall apart after 50,000 miles. My 96 accord feels 100x better inside then a gm that's 7 years old. And my accord has 240k miles on it

yeah i get that but the interior in my car is pretty good. it doesn't have any broken crap and everything works, and it doesn't rattle that bad.

i do get a rattle but if i push in on a piece of the plastic it goes away. it comes back after a while.

mine has 125k on it now  ;DDD

Car is running good pretty peppy with the 2.8

I bought a tower strut bar for it but it's stuck in polar vortex lmao...

Then I googled that these Cobalt SS have the strut towers welded to the firewall so the tower bar is basically cosmetic. But we'll see.

Should get here soon if it survives the snowpocolypse

One or more of my shocks have a clunk inside of them so I'm thinking about buying some springs and shocks.

Zzp has springs for 99 and kgb shocks for 135 a piece I think...

I was either going to get or ss tc shocks or the kyb whichever is cheaper

I wish the engine idled better with the big injectors

It throws a random misfire code that apparently can't be turned off in the tune.

You can feel it missing a little bit while it's idling. Funny thing is I think he really cold mornings it doesn't do it until it's warmed up and the code goes away for a little bit lol

I have the plugs gapped really tight (30ish) or else it won't rev past about 6000 with 18psi. With a tight gap (how I like) it revs to limiter 7200

It idles better with large gap 40-45

Apparently with the high powered zzp coils you can run the wide gap and still keep the spark at high rpm... They are like 200 bucks
Tho

Went out "overlanding" in Central Oregon. Pretty fun truck is great off-road. Left tires at 40psi and went through a lot of shit.

Pulled a big diesel truck out of some snow was pretty funny j had just went up there and came back to eat lunch and saw him drive past and was like that fucker is gunna get stuck of he tries it. 45mins later we go up to check for shits and giggles and he's stuck in first bit of snow/mud. In flip flops digging with a plastic kid shovel with kids dogs and wife with him

Yarding him out quick

i liked my frontier but i couldn't get a vibration out of it, and it started not locking the converter a few times so i just traded it in, had to press the dealership hard to pay off total amount of my loan but i told them i wouldn't buy anything unless it was paid off. only had 20k miles. the rear end had a vibration i think it was coming from the converter, everything else was checked... the truck was a rental and i think it got the shit ran out of it, had some shit / rocks / sandy dirt / etc way up under the truck in every place they couldn't hit with a power washer... oh well at least i didnt had to pay to get rid of it.

this new truck is amazing...

i looked and test drove a bunch of trucks, i was really interested in a colorado zr2, but i wanted a diesel one but they are hard to find... the v6 one was so gutless it was pathetic, and for 43k the interior was comparable to my cobalt.... i test drove a trail boss which is supposed to be the rebel equivalent half ton off road truck... it was pretty nice but the 5.3l was so gutless and the chevy 8spd sucked... it does get slightly better mileage than the rebel (about 20-21) on the highway. the interior in the trail boss was terrible compared to the rebel... and has less options and cost like 2k more... tooked at some TRD PRO tacomas but they are like 50k+ and the 3.5 is so gutless and the gas mileage is awful...

the hemi in the rebel is great and the ZF 8 speed is great as well way better than the chevy 8spd. interior is amazing all the options are great and the truck just looks badass. only grip is the fuel mileage but thats to be expected.... i was getting about 20 on the highway but in town it sucks gas even tho i drive like a grandpa...

my business is doing well and i have guaranteed income now so i don't mind buying something for myself right now...

i paid 43k (~56k msrp)for the truck and put some money down so loan is like 39k im going to try my hardest to just keep this truck forever

Friend just bought the identical truck but with the crew cab and shorter box. Pics don't do justice to how nice these trucks are.

there was a black one with the cred cab and shorter box, the back seats have a lot of room compared to the quad cab, but i only have my wife and son so i wasn't too worried about it i liked the white on black better than the black on black. i thought the quad cab longer bed looked better than the big cab and short bed, kinda just looked better.

the exhaust is like basically silent... i'm thinking about getting the magnaflow direct fit 24" muffler, which is supposed to just be slighly louder which is what i want. maybe a tune or pedal commander.

all the thinks i didnt like about the old hemis is better in these new trucks. one button to disable MDS is nice if you're driving around back roads and don't want it constantly having the MDS go on and off, and the gear limiter buttons on the steering wheel are great so the trans won't hunt gears going up hills or driving in the back roads, which the trans does a pretty good job anyways at not hunting if you just leave it alone.

the gas mileage is bad but so is every other truck that isn't a diesel. if i would've waiting till the 2020s come out i could've got the identical truck with the ecodiesel which probably would've been nice.

Unless they've been significantly updated I wouldn't own an ecodiesel. I haven't followed them but I have some friends and co workers that have them and they have been very expensive to maintain. I test drove one when they first came out and it was sloooow.

exhaust is breaking in on the truck and its slightly louder, sounds pretty good. the truck really hauls ass with this engine and transmission.

anyone else hate on 4 bangers run like shit with the a/c or defroster on? so annoying. now that summer is basically over and we never really had a summer anyways, i just unplug the a/c compressor so it won't come on with the defroster, runs so much better i'll wait the extra 6 seconds for the windshield to defrost

bought this 98 ls1 z28 for 2500 bucks on craigslist yesterday. i had to drive to bremerton, wa to get it tho. it was raining super hard the whole way up there and off and on heavy rain / slushy snow on the way back.

the guy bought the car for ls swap into his nova and ended up not doing it. it sat for 2 or 3 months with the t-tops leaking so it was wet inside but i got to it before there was any mold or real damage. someone put wood panel stickies onto a lot of the interior pieces LOL. has 130k and a4.

it runs and drives really nice its a steal for 2500 bucks. i'm going to put some elbow grease into it and get it fixed up nice. i started peeling off the wood shit on the drive home

has k&n lid, SLP loudmouth exhaust and the tips were put on backwards lol... it had a CEL on the way home and by the time i got back the CEL went off and stayed off. never checked to see what it was

PROS:
cheap
straight body with no dents
runs & drives great
decent wheels
SLP exhaust
shift kit or programming in transmission
everything inside works (power windows/power locks/power seat/power mirrors/cruise control)

CONS:
mismatched bald tires on every wheel
windshield wiper motor bad or broken / bent tab in mechanism wipers work fine but stop in the up position
goofy interior pieces
t-top leak
no T-STAT or broken T-STAT (never heats up fully but gets hot enough to have some heat)
backwards exhaust tips
headlights stuck on brights
brake rotors slightly warped but still stops good
headlight rubber seals messed up
no key fobs
belt sequel
cheesy messed up tint, especially on the rear hatch window (can't even see out of it)

already bought:

long tubes
t-stat
serp belt (installed right away)
275/40/r17 tires
drilled / slotted rotors & ceramic pads (same as ones i put on cobalt)
o2 extensions
2 new black 3.5" exhaust tips (same i put on cobalt)
bow tie valve stem caps  8)

bought this 98 ls1 z28 for 2500 bucks on craigslist yesterday. i had to drive to bremerton, wa to get it tho. it was raining super hard the whole way up there and off and on heavy rain / slushy snow on the way back.

the guy bought the car for ls swap into his nova and ended up not doing it. it sat for 2 or 3 months with the t-tops leaking so it was wet inside but i got to it before there was any mold or real damage. someone put wood panel stickies onto a lot of the interior pieces LOL. has 130k and a4.

it runs and drives really nice its a steal for 2500 bucks. i'm going to put some elbow grease into it and get it fixed up nice. i started peeling off the wood shit on the drive home

has k&n lid, SLP loudmouth exhaust and the tips were put on backwards lol... it had a CEL on the way home and by the time i got back the CEL went off and stayed off. never checked to see what it was

PROS:
cheap
straight body with no dents
runs & drives great
decent wheels
SLP exhaust
shift kit or programming in transmission
everything inside works (power windows/power locks/power seat/power mirrors/cruise control)

CONS:
mismatched bald tires on every wheel
windshield wiper motor bad or broken / bent tab in mechanism wipers work fine but stop in the up position
goofy interior pieces
t-top leak
no T-STAT or broken T-STAT (never heats up fully but gets hot enough to have some heat)
backwards exhaust tips
headlights stuck on brights
brake rotors slightly warped but still stops good
headlight rubber seals messed up
no key fobs
belt sequel
cheesy messed up tint, especially on the rear hatch window (can't even see out of it)

already bought:

long tubes
t-stat
serp belt (installed right away)
275/40/r17 tires
drilled / slotted rotors & ceramic pads (same as ones i put on cobalt)
o2 extensions
2 new black 3.5" exhaust tips (same i put on cobalt)
bow tie valve stem caps  8)

Not bad. I'd put some stock headlights in it.

i wouldn't buy them but i really don't mind it so much.

my gripe is with the brights being stuck on, they cut the wires to the normal lights so they wouldn't be on at the same time lol

i'm 90% sure its just the little rod that goes from the switch through the column and into behind the dash, it gets loose or whatever and just needs adjusted... i haven't had time to even get under there and just manually turn them off lol
